The Aims of 'Butterfly Sanctuaries of Southern Africa' (BSSA)
Are to establish nine new Butterfly Sanctuaries in Southern Africa. One for each province. These are tourist destinations.

  • Kwa-Zulu Natal Butterfly Sanctuary (KZNBS)

  • Eastern Cape Butterfly Sanctuary (ECBS)

  • Western Cape Butterfly Sanctuary (WCBS)

  • Northern Cape Butterfly Sanctuary (NCBS)

  • North West Butterfly Sanctuary (NWBS)

  • Limpopo Butterfly Sanctuary (LBS)

  • Free State Butterfly Sanctuary (FSBS)

  • Gauteng Butterfly Sanctuary (GBS)

  • Mpumalanga Butterfly Sanctuary (MBS)

These are planned and designated butterfly sanctuaries to be established for each province of South Africa. These will have a uniformity and will have regulatory measures in place to guide each sanctuary by adhering to a code of conduct presented by (BSSA).

Provincial Butterfly Sanctuaries
All these butterfly sanctuaries (as listed above), will fall under the umbrella of BUTTERFLY SANCTUARIES OF SOUTHERN AFRICA (BSSA), who is affiliated to South African Butterfly Breeding Association (SABBA) and Conservation of Butterflies in South Africa (CBISA).

 

 


The Objectives of  Local Provincial Butterfly Sanctuaries
These Butterfly Sanctuaries will provide the following to the general public;

  • Environmental education

  • Awareness of butterflies and other insects

  • Employment opportunities

  • A butterfly Lepidome (house) in which one can view many butterfly species

  • A breeding centre, where the entire life cycle of a butterfly can be witnessed live

  • A tea garden

  • Butterfly parks/gardens, demonstrating  landscaping that is beneficial to butterflies and pleasing to the eye

  • Restaurant

  • Craft shop/art gallery

  • Orchid house

  • A nursery for indigenous host plants for sale to the public

  • A Wedding venue

  • Assist Local Provincial Breeders

Environmental education
Environmental education is a program aimed at local schools, education institutions, garden clubs, all eco clubs, in the form of providing lectures and practical visuals to create an awareness of the aims and objectives of the Local Provincial Butterfly Sanctuary. This is one of the best marketing tools applied.

Awareness of butterflies and other insects
At the Local Provincial Butterfly Sanctuary Lepidome, tours are provided to local and international tourists including local educational institutions and clubs. A hands on experience of butterflies and other insects.

Employment opportunities
The Local Provincial Butterfly Sanctuary will automatically need assistance from the local community, who in turn are trained and employed as tour guides, chefs, shop managers and cleaning staff for the sanctuary.

A butterfly Lepidome (house) in which one can view many butterfly species
The Lepidome is an awesome indoor experience of butterflies, flying in their hundreds for viewers to admire, photograph and find satisfying pleasure from.

A breeding centre, where the entire life cycle of a butterfly can be witnessed live
The breeding centre is an educational experience showing the different butterfly larva/caterpillars, following their transitions to becoming chrysalis/pupae to emerge as butterflies, fresh and beautiful.

A tea garden
The tea garden is a tranquil fascinating experience where one can still view butterflies in their natural habitat, in which you can be tantalized with the local menu.

Butterfly parks/gardens, demonstrating  landscaping that is beneficial to butterflies and pleasing on the eye
The landscaping of outside trails, leads one into the kingdom of butterflies. Identifying their local host plants and how these attract the various species to this haven for butterflies.

Restaurant
Here the local chef will provide you with a delicious menu of superb quizine for all its visitors and tourists alike.

Craft shop/art gallery
The craft shop supplies an endless assortment of butterfly crafts and also houses selective local art.

Orchid house
The orchid house is in actual fact based inside a structure inside the Lepidome, imitating the inside of a volcano, in which hundreds of orchids hang from the walls, to present an inspiring natural atmosphere of beauty to behold

A nursery for indigenous host plants for sale to the public
The indigenous nursery will give the local community the opportunity to purchase indigenous trees, shrubs and flowers for their gardens to attract butterfly spies and enrich the local communities environment. It will also supply breeders with the plants they need and which are at times difficult to get.

A Wedding venue
The Lepidome is a splendid venue for a wedding for  the local community. Imagine the wedding taking place while so many butterflies carry their blessings and are after all the carriers of delight, beauty and peace for all.

Assist local Provincial Breeders
These breeders will help the Local Provincial Butterfly Sanctuary Lepidome, by supplying fresh butterflies regularly for visitors to admire.

  • to involve the local community in the development of the breeding center

  • provide a tea garden/tuck shop

An opportunity for small groups to see the breeding process of butterflies and their life cycles
The opportunity for small groups such as a single classroom of children, pensioner groups, eco clubs, to see how the breeding process takes place and to witness the emergence of a fresh newly hatched butterfly.

How to breed butterflies in a controlled environment
Here they learn how the breeding of butterflies is done. The amount of work and time that is put into producing healthy butterflies.

To involve the local community in the development of the breeding center
Involving the local community in the development of the breeding center and in the programs developed for its success.

Provide a tea garden/tuck shop
To provide sustenance for the visitors from the local communities.

The Objectives of Provincial Breeders/Breeding Centre
These Breeding Centers provide the following services to the Provincial Butterfly Sanctuary with the supply of:

  • butterfly eggs

  • butterfly larva/caterpillars

  • butterfly chrysalis/pupae

  • freshly bred butterflies/imago
